I think that we really need a biochemistry related case so that we may get a better understanding of how G. Aoyama is thinking about these sciences. For now, all we've got is a short (and for me somewhat garbled, the formula shown in one anime episode is only eyecandy, looking more like the filling of a gasoline tank and not like a potent medicinal drug) explanation involving apoptosis for the APTX. To reconciliate the discrepancy between a "deadly poison" and a "handy shrinking potion", I'd like to know if Aoyama thinks about biology the same way as he presents us with super brains turning quickly up with deductive solutions for sometimes weird cases (remind the, as I'd like to call them, "archaetypical fishing-line-and-dry-ice-cases"), natural sciences being and holding possibly a third of a solution for a "world formula", with love and intelligence representing the other two thirds. If that is the case, then I would envisaging that Vermouth - I am not sure which Vineyard woman filled and fills this role - indeed tried to commit suicide (a possible reason could be that she did not see a reason to live anylonger) with the APTX but ending up instead with hating the biochemists, both or one of the Miyanos, responsible for her doom of a (nearly?) perpetual and likely dull life of a woman in her thirties (a humoristic approach to problems related to such an existence may be found in the Twilight Cullen family life of an everlasting need to move to new places of residence and passing high school exams every other year or so). Nonobstant this, I do not see a way in which a person with leading responsibilities wilfully ingests a drug aimed/intended to kill (how many lab mice did Sherry use? Quite a plethora if I recal correctly, getting a lone(!) survivor), so a scheme involving a boss who ingested APTX is not likely (I think that we could neglect a concept of a suicidal black organisation aiming for a collective suicide...) -p.2 follows soon, not enough DSi-memory
...collective suicide akin of the one orchestred by th People's Temple in Jonestown, Guyana, back in 1978 with around 900 dead). So, if Aoyama is this fond of natural sciences as he is fond of detective stories, then there is a notable probability that there are indeed at least TWO substances with "magical" shrinking for one and anti-aging properties for the other, hence, the boss may have tried one of those on himself.
Meanwhile, as I wrote this, I got another idea. Has someone already seen a connection between Vine-Yard and the BO codenames related to alcoholic beverages? At least phonetically, a "vine yard" as a production place of the oldest alcoholic beverage of mankind may hint a kind of relationship, possibly a familiar relationship at the base, for core and/or founding members of the Black Organisation. BTW, this would fit in Aoyama's habit of basing lots of pairings in the childhood of the protagonists and AFAIK Japanese worshipping of the family and the Elder (kami?). It's not far flung to think about an Evil version of family and worshipped Elder alias Anokata that is to be brought to fall by the Good alias faith and intelligence personificated in Shinichi and his friends.

I hope that it'll be forgiven to me that I trust in the lecturer's knowledge of English and as such won't translate my postings in German as it's really strenuous to use a Nintendo DSi as a stand-in for a broken computer for posting here...
