First off, I hope you guys will forgive me for writing this in English, but it's late and I just returned from a holiday, so I don't feel up to doing it in German. XD
For those of you who may not know me, I'm Fujiwara from DCTP, nice to meet you.
Let me try to explain why I translated the 'ko' into 'girl' ...
The short answer is this: Because it is, in fact, the correct translation given the circumstances surrounding the utterance. You can trust me on this, but you don't have to, since it was actually proven in the new chapter (876) where Conan explicitly thinks 女の子 (=girl, no questions asked).
Please note that this does not mean that it's definitely a girl, or that I think it's a girl (I don't, as a matter of fact), simply that Conan thinks it is.
The slightly longer answer: 子 can mean either kid/child or girl, depending on the circumstances, as experience or a good dictionary will tell you. I looked at the circumstances, i.e. the whole scene (not just the spoiler pic), who's speaking/thinking (in relation to who is spoken about) and how they usually express themselves, the side note (which explicitly spoke about a girl as well) and translated accordingly. And File 876 showed that that is indeed what Conan was thinking.
Difficult stuff, all in all. XD
I hope that explanation makes the translation a bit clearer. I can't promise that I'll never make a mistake when translating - especially since Gosho is a master at keeping things vague in such a way that it's hard to translate that vagueness into English - but I can promise you that I put a lot of effort into getting it right and that I do know what I'm doing, so have a little faith
